April 23, 2019 Call Summary

NSSP Update
  • Michael Coletta (CDC) provided an update on the upcoming Data Sharing Workshop, scheduled for April 30 - May 1, in Atlanta, GA. He also reviewed upcoming updates to the user experience of the My ESSENCE dashboard and the new site processing emails being sent to site administrators. Many of these updates can be found in the recent  NSSP Update monthly newsletter.

Topic of the Month - Drownings & Submersion Events
  • Erin Swartz, Wisconsin Department of Human Services, reviewed work completed by the Preparedness Team during the flooding in August/ September 2018. The team used the nightly syndromic surveillance data to identify 297 possible flood-related injuries, with 58 of those cases confirmed, as the event progressed. A full write up of this work can be found in the Stories of Surveillance Action Library.
  • Amanda Morse, Washington State Health Department, gave an overview of a recent search query around Drowning & Submersion Events that was initiated through a partnership with the Environmental Health Group. The analysis showed an expected increase in the number of events identified during the warmer months, but Washington will be looking more into trends identified related to age, sex, outcomes, and event location.
  • Zach Stein, NSSP Contractor, discussed the process he used to validate and enhance the DrowningOrSubmersion ESSENCE SubSyndrome. Zach followed the process outlined in the  Syndrome Definition Committee's recently published guidance document Developing, Evaluating, and Disseminating Definitions for Syndromic Surveillance in Public Health Practice: A Guidance Document. A full write up of Zach's work can be found in the April NSSP Update.
